Traveling by car gives us freedom of movement, almost unlimited luggage, and, most importantly, the ability to change your route at any time. Also, it is a great way to travel while avoiding crowded airports and flight check-ins. Car travel allows you to visit places where it is impossible to walk or take a tour. On the other hand, it has some special features and challenges. Particularly, it’s often rather difficult to eat healthily, our meals are often replaced by hot dogs from the gas station, and it becomes acceptable to eat Snickers instead of breakfast. And in case of a long trip, it will add unwanted feelings.
It’s common knowledge when we’re bored, we find the closest snack and binge, and that tends to happen when you’re on a road trip. And I am here to help you find some healthy snacks to eat while on the road that will keep you feeling full, nourished.
Here are the top delicious ways to avoid unwanted calories and greasy highway stops.
1. Fresh apples
Just cut it and put it in the containers. The main advantage of apples is that they are sour – it keeps you awake.
2. Fruit chips
Apples are the best for it, but it can be whatever you like. The preparation takes more time to cut and dry it, but it will stay fresh and tasty without the fridge for a long time and don’t have much weight.
Similar to apples, you can put it in the containers. Carrot is one of the best options because it stays fresh for several days. Also, it will keep you busy for a long time =)
Similar to carrots, grapes are a great option for when you’re bored and want to eat something on the road. Healthy, clean, and easy to eat, grapes will help stave off the boredom.
5. Tasty tea in thermos
When you feel you are hungry, start with the water or tea. Our body often mixes thirst and hungry. Another option is to take boiling water in the thermos and tea bags. It is a good choice if you prefer to make the tea directly before the meal and would like to make a stop along the way.
As it has a short shelf life, you should eat it first.
It’s a good source of fats and fiber. Although, they are much lower in terms of calories than other nuts.
Pistachios aren’t the only great nuts — walnuts have the highest amount of plant-based omega-3 fatty acids in comparison to other nuts, which will help you feel full for a longer amount of time.
13. Baked chickpeas
These snacks are easy to make at home – simply drain and dry your chickpeas, then toss them with olive oil. Season with salt and other spices of your choosing and bake for 30-40 minutes.
14. Ham and cream cheese
Ham and cream cheese wheels are very easy to make – simply lay out a piece of ham, spoon some cream cheese into the middle. Then roll the ham up into a tube, slice it into small pieces and pack in the container. It will help keep you full, and keep additional cravings from kicking in.
15. Trail mix
Though there are plenty of options for trail mix at the store, we always prefer to make our own.
And this recipe is almost too simple not to make: ½ cup whole-grain cereal, 2 T pecans, 1 T unsweetened shredded coconut, 1 T dark chocolate chips or cacao nibs.
16. Coconut chips
When you’re craving something sweet, grab for some coconut chips. These are simply slices of coconut that have been baked in oil until they become crunchy.
17. Dark chocolate
The main advantages of dark chocolate are the facts that it lowers the risk of heart disease while also increasing brain function.
The advantage is the same as the tea. It often happens that when we think we are hungry, we are actually just thirsty. If regular water is too “boring” or you don’t like it, instead try some carbonated water that makes your drink feel a bit more exciting, and more like a treat. Just be sure they don’t add to much sugar.
19. Nutrition bars
Here I recommend paying attention to fruit and cereal bars. Select the ones which have less sugar and which you like more, all popular brands offer many different tastes.
20. Single-serve popcorn bags
Sometimes all you need is a crunch. All low-cal, high fiber, and pre-popped leaves you with no need for a microwave, chemicals, or a reason to keep track of your consumption. Flavors like white cheddar and kettle hold are the good options if you prefer spicy.
21. Cheese packs and crackers
Cheese bars, rounds, or sticks—whatever shape you choose of the well-portioned treats are loaded with calcium, protein, and flavor. Also, you can pair it with one of our favorite crackers. One of the best sandwiches ever.
See — snacking healthy while on the road doesn’t have to be boring.
Actually, the healthier you snack, the more you’ll be able to enjoy your trip. You will feel energy and happiness while eating the nutrients which the body needs and wants. Just spend some time on planning your menu in advance on the way to a healthy road trip that’s guaranteed to be awesome.
